"Keyloggers are constantly being shown in the media as a powerful, effective tool used by law enforcement to build strong cases against suspected online sex predators," said a spokesperson for the website. "As a result of this exposure, there has been a dramatic increase of interest in keylogger software by private citizens looking to conduct investigations on their own - most often to see if a spouse is being unfaithful or to monitor teens for inappropriate online behavior."
A keylogger is a software program that is secretly installed on a computer to monitor and record all activity on that computer. All keystrokes, emails, and instant messages are recorded into a log file which can only be retrieved by the person who installed the keylogger. Running in complete stealth, there is virtually no way to detect that the keylogger is running on the computer by anyone except the person who installed it.
"It’s hard to dispute the evidence that these programs capture," the spokesperson continued. "The guilty party literally types their own way into trouble, writing their own confession letter in a sense. If there is anything suspicious going on and the computer is being used, all the evidence will be captured by the keylogger. It’s just a matter of time."
