"Even the Mayo Clinic recommends yoga for fibromyalgia,"
"Exercise is an extremely important part of coping with fibromyalgia syndrome, and yoga in particular is ideal. Not only does the practice of asana, or postures, relieve soreness and tender points, but the practice of yogic breathing called pranayama increases oxygenation of the blood, allowing the brain and other organs to function more smoothly.
"Too often fibromyalgia is thought to be a muscle problem. It's cause is more accurately understood to lie within the brain's interpretation of pain signals. The roots of fibromyalgia are neurological and hormonal," states Morgan. "And though yoga may not cure fibromyalgia, study after study shows that yoga can play a role in balancing neurotransmitter and hormone function."
"In other words, yoga is the perfect exercise for fibromyalgia."
Yoga also teaches methods for relaxation, particularly important for people with FMS whose ability to cope with stress may be diminished, or who have difficulty sleeping.
