The line’s signature material this season is flattened bamboo, which while still allowing all the construction possibilities of standard woods, has the eco-friendly benefit of absorbing over four times more CO2 from the atmosphere than a similar area of new growth forest.

“People hear ‘bamboo’ and they think of Gilligan and MaryAnn sitting around on stick-furniture chairs,” laughs Fernwalla president, Alec Uitti, “but today’s flattened bamboo is pressed into boards just like traditional lumber, and the uses are endless.” The deep, long grain and hand-cut dovetails in the Matteo 6-drawer Dresser show just how resourceful and elegant bamboo can be. Prior to final assembly, Fernwalla’s designers use a steaming process to “carbonize” the bamboo which then turns it a soothing shade of golden brown similar to an amber or light cherry stain – all without the use of any solvents or chemicals. “I’m still amazed at how beautiful ‘green’ can be,” says Uitti.
