Feb 21, 2008 – Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Gold Medal Award
Under the auspices of the UNESCO IFLA 46th World Congress in Brazil, in 2009, will be the venue for the second IFLA Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Gold Medal award-giving. This Gold Medal awarded every four years by the International Federation of Landscape Architects pays tribute to a practising landscape architect whose merit, talent and actions are acknowledged at international level. This quadrennial competition is opened to landscape architects throughout the world whose activities deal with landscape planning, design or management, improvement in the quality of human settlements and landscape architectural education. Nominations for the reward are made by landscape associations or IFLA members. Peter Walker was IFLA Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Gold Medal award’s inaugural winner in 2005 at IFLA’s 42nd World Congress in Edinburgh, Scotland. Among many other prestigious projects, Peter Walker in partnership with architect Michael Arad team won the commission for the World Trade Center Memorial in New York. The international jury for this award-giving is formed by Philippe Poullaouec-Gonidec the UNESCO chair in Landscape and Environmental Design of the University of Montreal founder and holder, Nigel Thorne, President of the Landscape Institute - founded by Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe – and, for the second time, acting as chief judge, the Swedish Thorbjörn Andersson, head of the SWECO FFNS landscape unit, guest teacher and design critic at miscellaneous universities and research centers. For Mr. Andersson “this jury work is great to be part of. Going through the candidates convinces us that present landscape architecture is far beyond beauty and flowers. Many of the achievements of the candidates deal with the major societal issues of today such as sustainability, climate, and integration between cultures”. This highest recognition bestowed upon a landscape architect by the International Federation of Landscape Architects commemorates the remarkable contribution to IFLA of its President of Honour who served as president from 1948 to 1954. Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe (1900-1996) was an exceptional landscape architect with an extensive and rich career. His strongest interest was in landscape and garden designer with a passion for water. Knighted for services to landscape architecture in 1979, he was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s highest honour, the Victoria Medal of Honour in 1994. Those submitting nominations for the second quadrennial shall forward the nomination package to: IFLA Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Gold Medal, Secretary General, IFLA, c/o MVillage, Rue des Palais, 44, Bte. 21 - 1030, Brussels, BELGIUM before the closing date for the Medal. The deadline for the second quadrennial is 5pm, May 2, 2008.
