Trucking is popular. In 2006, 1,860,000 Americans chose heavy trucking as their occupation of choice, according to the 2006 Current Populations Survey from the US Department of Labor Statistics. Women truckers however, make up a small 5.2 percent of those truck drivers. Even a moderate response to Roadmaster’s call for more women truck drivers could make a big difference.
One Roadmaster Drivers School commercial features a woman considering a career in trucking. Playing that truck driving school student is Katie Hardcastle of Tampa. When asked about her experience filming, Ms. Hardcastle reported, “It became apparent to me just how many untapped opportunities are out there for women. Many women may not realize that the trucking industry is not a totally male-dominated field. I hope many truck driver stereotypes will be dispelled after seeing the new commercials.”
