Feb. 13, 2008 - PRLog -- Westmeath County Council has inked a deal with Magnet Business for the provision of Wide Area Network (WAN) connectivity to three council offices. Using the fibre optic Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), Magnet will provide a fully managed 100Mbps fibre connection across offices in Mullingar. The contract was awarded following a competitive tender process.

Over the last 12 months Magnet Business has signed similar deals with Limerick City Council and Offaly County Council and this new contract further extends the company’s reach in the regions and the public sector.

Westmeath County Council is currently engaged in a programme of improving its inter-office voice and data services and Kevin Monaghan, Head of Information Systems at Westmeath County Council said of the deal:

“Our service delivery model is one which is focused on bringing services closer to the citizen and to do this effectively we are greatly dependent on a highly efficient communications infrastructure. The introduction of this managed service from Magnet Business will have an immediate and positive impact on Council operations and facilitate the improved delivery of a number of in-house ICT applications.”

The deal sees Magnet Business replace legacy wireless infrastructure with a fully scalable fibre connection supplying virtually unlimited bandwidth. With the County Council offices now connected to a fully diverse network, service availability will increase considerably.

Mark Kellett, CEO of Magnet Business said: “Westmeath County Council needed a reliable, secure and effective communications solution to support the range of services it delivers daily. Working with e|net, we can deliver speeds up to 100Mbps. Employees are now free to use the latest applications such as VoIP and video conferencing, without thinking twice about the volume of content they send around the network.”

Speaking further about the service provided, Monaghan stated: “From a technical standpoint, the connections themselves were simple to implement and were ably project managed by Magnet Business and e|net.  Integration with our existing network was straightforward and we are now benefiting from a resilient, un-contended and highly available broadband service.  Our experiences to date in dealing with Magnet as a managed service provider have been very positive and we look forward to an ongoing business relationship.”

Chief Executive Officer of e|net Conal Henry commented: “We’ve worked with Magnet on similar projects in the past and they continue to impress in terms of the technology and standard of service they provide.  This project highlights again the benefits of utilising the MANs to facilitate the provision of a quality broadband infrastructure in the regions. In the current economic climate, the MANs will continue to grow in importance, not only in terms of increasing competition in the telecommunications market, but also for the retention and expansion of foreign investment in the regions”.

In a short space of time there are over 600,000 users benefiting from the existence of the MAN’s. The Government is currently proceeding with a second phase of the Metropolitan Area Network Programme for the building of up to a further 90 MANs around Ireland.
