Investment exchange Plus Markets has posted impressive trading growth during early 2008.
During January, the exchange, which was launched in November last year, saw a 92 per cent increase in trading volume compared to December.
Meanwhile, the total value of trades for the month stood at £2.8 billion - a rise of 61 per cent - and the number of shares traded grew to 1.7 billion, representing an increase of 70 per cent.
The average daily number of trades during January climbed from December 's figure of 10,901 to 18,065.
Trading on the exchange has been growing rapidly during the last three months and during January accounted for 39 per cent of trading in the UK.
On January 22nd it accounted for 53 per cent of all trading activity in the UK, exceeding the London Stock Exchange for the first time since its launch.
Cyril Theret, business development director at Plus, said: "These are extremely encouraging numbers which demonstrate that under MiFID, transaction volume is flowing to Plus Markets.
"Brokers recognise Plus as a competitive trading venue across all equity segments and as liquidity continues to build, it is creating firm foundations for new listing and quotation possibilities."
