Drawing on the creative roots that connect them to the motherland and the black church experience, the works of these African-American women artists will be on exhibit from February 27, 2008 through March 22, 2008 at Canvas Paper & Stone Gallery, 2611 Frederick Douglass Blvd., Studio 2N (between W. 139th and 140th Sts.) in Harlem. The opening reception is on Friday, February 29, 2008 from 6 to 9pm. The exhibition is also an introduction for an upcoming book featuring these artists.
The book, “Art Jam! Sweetpotato Style Sisters Cookin’ Together, An Anthology of 18 African American Women” is being put together by two New York City-based artists, BJ Winston, a visual artist and poet, and PJ Jones, a photographer and writer. A variety of artists are participating including photographers, writers, visual artists, floral arrangers and more. Exhibiting artists at Canvas Paper and Stone Gallery include floral designer E. Maye Beauchamp, filmmaker Dale Pierce Nielsen, PJ Jones, BJ Winston, hair historian Carla Brown, writer and photographer Noreen Mallory, visual artist Aleathia Brown and quilter Margaret Feemster. “Art Jam!...” extends recognition long overdue to artists from north and south, east to west whose innate creativity covers everything from prose to floral design.
