Historical Perspectives for Children is dedicated to presenting strong historical role models whose stories specifically complement the social studies, language arts and science K-8 curricula. In presenting the life of Madam Walker, president, founder and author Joan Schaeffer's focus is to encourage students' natural entrepreneurial spirit which, she believes, is critical in their preparation for our ever-more competitive world. Additionally, Schaeffer believes Madam Walker's story teaches students the importance of setting goals, developing a plan to achieve them, being organized, and working hard to see one's goals through to completion, skills which are essential for a student's success in school. Finally, Schaeffer wants to present a broader perspective of black history to students, a history which goes beyond the story of Harriet Tubman to show how African Americans achieved as a result of the end of slavery.
This year, HPC is also presenting Helen Keller, Ben Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, Clara Barton, Gabriela Mistral and Laura Ingalls Wilder in schools throughout Chicago, Minneapolis/
