FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release)Jan 25, 2008 – Now that many of you have made and are happily sticking to your New Year resolutions, why not also make some changes for your pets too and help them enjoy a safe and healthy 2008

Pet Protect’s 10 New Year Resolutions:

1. Exercise helps maintain healthy body weight and strengthens joints and muscles. The level of exercise your dog needs isn't necessarily linked to its size, so check with your vet the weekly recommended level of exercise for its breed. Remember it is also very important that you don’t over-exercise your dog.

2. Stick to a regular feeding routine and avoid giving titbits. Pet obesity is a serious condition affecting half of all pets in the UK (RSPCA 2007).

3. Know what foods are poisonous to your dog. Chocolate, onions, raisins and grapes are all toxic.

4. Make sure water is always available. Did you know, just a small drop in body fluids in dogs (3-4%) can lead to dehydration, so make sure you keep a bowl of water frequently topped up.

5. Microchip your dog to help ensure a speedy recovery if he or she goes missing.

6. Groom your dog regularly. By keeping their teeth clean, their coats brushed, their nails trimmed, and their ears clean, you'll be helping with your dogs' overall wellbeing and health. Some breeds have special grooming needs so ask your vet or professional groomer for advice.

7. Spay and Neuter. Spayed and neutered dogs tend to have fewer health problems. Neutering a dog typically costs from £60 but will vary from vet to vet.

8. Dog-proof your house and garden the way you would for a baby or toddler and keep potentially lethal substances locked away, including alcohol, household chemicals and medicines.

9. Be prepared. Find out and keep details of your local vet and emergency hospital just in case you need them in a hurry.

10. If you haven't already, consider taking out pet insurance to safeguard against unexpected vet bills, and ensure your pet gets the highest quality of care. Did you know £17m is spent on vet fees every week in the UK (Mintel 2005).
