Drive Kids to be Fit is partnering with The Center For Health Communication on an innovative project that aims to tell the personal stories of children struggling with weight. They will be documenting the lives of overweight middle school children who are trying to get healthy. The project will give these children a chance to share their experiences with the world. The plan is to supply them with webcams which they will use to record themselves once per week, expressing their successes, failures, anxieties and their relationships with friends and family members who are a part of their lives.
The project will last from 3 – 6 months and emphasizes the point of view of the children. There may be a reporter sent to ask minimal questions but the goal is to allow the children to express themselves in their own words about their weight, their feelings about food, their activities and their overall health. The stories will be distributed via text and online, in order to reach a broad audience. Each child will begin by discussing their goals so that viewers and readers can go on the journey with them. At the end of the project, an interactive presentation will be available online.
“Combating childhood obesity is a big task and it has to be approached at all angles,” says Max Mikhaiel, Director of Drive Kids to be Fit. “I agreed to be a part of this project because it is a fresh, new, way to look at the problem of childhood obesity so it aligns with the mission of Drive Kids to be Fit—giving kids tools they can use to get fit.”
Drive Kids to be Fit is currently looking for children who want to be a part of this ground-breaking project. Drive Kids to be Fit is a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting childhood obesity through programs that are educational, effective and fun.
