Two of Ireland’s best contemporary writers in India for Irish Literary Festival

If you’re looking for a good book, look for an Irish book…

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release)Jan 17, 2008 – The Irish Literary Festival continues this week at the India Habitat Centre with main events starting from Thursday, 17 January and Friday, 18 January 2008.

January 17 2008 - Two great writers on one stage

Thursday’s events will witness two of Ireland’s best and most successful contemporary novelists reading from their works and interacting with a Delhi audience.

Dermot Bolger is an accomplished novelist, poet and playwright, and has been called the ‘Charles Dickens of Dublin’.  His latest novel, The Family from Paradise Pier is a historical saga, which looks at 20th Century wars through the experiences of one Irish family.

Gerard Donovan is a New York-based poet and novelist whose latest novel, Julius Winsome, has been acclaimed as one of the best books of recent years.  It tells the story of a man’s quest for revenge when his best friend, his dog, is killed.

January 18 2008 - Meet the only first-class cricketer to win a Nobel Prize

Not many people in India may know it, but Irish playwright, Samuel Beckett, is the only person who played first-class cricket and won a Nobel Prize.  Beckett played in the English County League in 1925 and 1925 and was a left-arm opening batsman and bowler.  He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969, following in the footsteps of previous Irish winners George Bernard Shaw and WB Yeats.

Photographer John Minihan (www.johnminihan.com) was a friend of Beckett for many years and introduces us to the writer in a multimedia presentation ‘Beckett and the Wake; on Friday evening at the Habitat Centre.

Admission to both events is free and all are welcome.  Further details can be obtained form the Irish Embassy (www.irelandinindia.com or phone 2462 6733) or the Habitat Centre.

The Irish Literary Festival continues until 31 January with further events scheduled for 24, 25, 28, 29 and 31 January 2008.
