This year comes with the best odds for sportsmen to hook an enormous fish in one of the hottest fishing spots in the Western hemisphere. And the price to accomplish the feat is the lowest it’s ever going to be! That’s the word from the veteran Captain and crew of The M/V Coral Star, homeport, David, Panama.
Last season, M/V Coral Star anglers caught and released marlin weighing up to1,000 pounds, (called “granders"
Conditions for sport fishing in the deep water of the Coiba National Park with several islands and the sizeable underwater mountain known as Hannibal Bank are always some of the most fertile on the planet. In fact, the M/V Coral Star crew calls the renowned Hannibal Bank fishing grounds “our own little Jurassic Park,” due to the monster fish reeled in from this part of the Pacific, about 30 miles offshore the Central American Country of Panama.
The ocean current, underwater topography, diverse habitat and lack of population and exploration all play a part in the reputation of Panama as a sport fishing paradise. Now with La Nina, producing the opposite effects of the more notorious El Nino, the M/V Coral Star fishing hole is swarming with Black and Blue Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, Pacific Sailfish and a variety of other species. For reasons not fully understood, periodically the circulating trade winds become stronger, increasing the amount of cooler water. Cooler water temperatures bring more fish to the surface where they find the anglers bait.
Tony Pena, expert angler and sports writer says he prefers the M/V Coral Star fishing grounds to any other in the world and he’s fished them all. He says he’s really excited for this year’s expedition because he too believes La Nina will deliver even more action. “La Nina’s are very good for Black Marlin fishing because the cooler water brings up more nutrients which increases the biomass including forage fish that the marlin feed on,” explains Pena
The M/V Coral Star is a 115-foot live-aboard offering sport fishing, adventure diving and nature exploration in and around Hannibal Bank and Coiba National Park for 10 years. All state rooms have individually controlled air conditioning and private baths. The ship has three teak decks and the popular “Fantail Bar,” where cocktails and fish stories are served each evening.
