Sun danger is not just a summer phenomenon. Even in the winter, your face, neck, ears and hands are still exposed to the sun’s UVA/UVB rays. These rays, which cause wrinkles as well as several forms of skin cancer with repeated and prolonged exposure, don’t disappear as the temperature drops. They are present even on cloudy days and exposed skin is left vulnerable without sunscreen or clothing.
• The doctors at South Shore Skin Center recommend the application of a sunscreen of at least 30 SPF, that protects against UVA and UVB rays, to exposed skin every day. Sunscreen may be applied prior to a moisturizer, or use a moisturizer that contains sunscreen. • Your eyes are also susceptible to damage from the sun’s rays. To decrease your chances of developing eye disease, wear sunglasses that block UVA and UVB.
• Skip the tanning booths. Both types of UV radiation are emitted and can cause severe damage to the skin and skin cancer.
According to Drs. Richard Eisen and Ramzi Saad of South Shore Skin Center in Cohasset and Plymouth, “Using sunscreen during the winter months is just as important as using it during the summer. Because the weather is cooler, many people assume that the sun’s rays are weak because they don’t feel hot and uncomfortable when they go outdoors. Unfortunately, the sun’s UVA/UVB rays are generally strong year-round and it’s important to protect the skin.”
The FDA is currently reviewing labeling requirements on sunscreen to help make it easier for consumers when purchasing sunscreen.
