Music business expert Michael Wood has some advice for children and parents regarding the new guitars and other instruments that will be found under the tree this Christmas - music business lessons are required long before musical lessons are. “Some of the greatest players of our generation are self taught either by the latest guitar magazine or by ear. What they really need to is know how to book a gig, how to avoid the myriad of trials and tribulations this business can bring to a young, inexperienced budding guitar hero.
“Parents may have just received the news that their child wants to be the next Britney Spears or Axl Rose. Today’s music climate requires all involved in a budding rock star’s career to be incredibly business savvy and have a grasp on the ever changing, ever more complicated business of music” says Mr. Wood. With labels merging and downsizing, new companies developing things called EPKs (electronic press kits), to music publishing, all the different facets of the music business can leave you wondering what is going on and how you can help your child who has decided he or she wants to be the next “American Idol”.
Author of the brand new book “You’ve Got A Friend In The ‘Biz”, Mr. Wood has been a touring musician for years and performed along side Kansas, Buckcherry, Vince Neil, Everclear and more. His group “Circuit” has performed for the Chicago White Sox, The Cincinnati Reds, The Memphis Redbirds, The NHL and the IRL. “Everyone used to ask how did you do that? How did you get signed? I don’t even know anyone (in the business)” said Mr. Wood. These very questions not only inspired the writing of the book, but it’s title and the main premise of Mr. Wood introducing the reader to his contacts including Casey Kasem, Dale Penner (producer, Nickelback), Ruth McCartney (Paul McCartney’s sister), Tom Anderson (Founder, MySpace.com)
Mr. Wood is a college professor and a voting member of the recording academy for the 50th anniversary Grammy Awards.
