FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PRLog (Press Release) –
Dec 12, 2007 – The Multi-use games area (MUGA) installed in the Rhondda Valley village of Tylorstown has proved a resounding success and become the hub of the community. Not only has it resulted in higher activity levels in the young people of the village, but everybody in the community now has access to many sporting activities other than football such as rounders, netball, kickball, tennis and rock climbing. Cardiff City Football Club used the facility to teach football skills to the young people of the village which gave them an opportunity to meet some of the players, and it has even been used by the road safety team for a cycle proficiency course to help improve road safety for the young people in the community!
The MUGA project started after Tylorstown Communities First carried out a community consultation. Residents felt that they really needed a safe environment to encourage young people in the village to take part in sporting activities, but as they wanted facilities that encompassed more than just football, the Communities First decided that a MUGA would be a perfect solution. The project received funding from the Sport Council for Wales and Barclays Spaces for Sport who also covered development over three years and included a provision for kit and equipment. Watford-based Monster Play Systems won the contract to install the MUGA as the council felt that their tender offered high quality at a competitive price and three months later, the MUGA was ready for action. “Since we installed the MUGA, it has become the focus of the village,” commented Rebecca Sullivan, Community Development Worker at Tylorstown. “It’s far more versatile than an open pitch it is used daily by a wide range of sporting and activity groups of all ages. We also commissioned two of Monster Play’s contemporary youth shelters close by so the young people had a meeting point and could enjoy watching the activities in the MUGA” Deian Thomas, Sports Development Worker for Tylorstown Communities First commented, “Having a MUGA in place within the community makes my job much easier as I have a facility to meet with the young people as well as developing structured sports activities in a controlled area. From our experience, we would recommend other towns and villages to install a MUGA because it can be used for so many different activities. We want to celebrate our success, so we will be holding an annual sporting day to encourage even more people to use the MUGA. Monster Play Systems are supporting us by sponsoring a 5-a-side football competition, and we hope that Tylorstown will become the fittest village in Wales.” e n d s Date December 2007 Editor’s Notes High resolution photographs available on request More about Monster Play Systems Ltd Monster Play Systems is one of the UK’s fastest growing and most innovative provider of children’s play equipment, youth shelters, skate parks and ball courts.
