Dec 10, 2007 – Ottawa, ON - A four-year-old Andrew started his junior kindergarten at Sawmill Creek school in September. Finally, after all these anticipations he gets to ride on that big, yellow bus. But the most exciting thing is that now he has a new teacher with whom he can share all his favorite books. Andrew starts and finishes his every day with books. He learned to read before he turned two. By four, he has mastered hundreds of books in science, music, geography, literature... He can speak and read fluently in English and Russian and has a large vocabulary in Arabic and French. He has broad knowledge of the world around him, and still his parents ask themselves every day "Am I doing enough to stimulate my child?"
About 2350 years ago, a Greek philosopher Aristotle said that ‘those who educate children well are more to be honored than parents, for these only gave life, those the art of living well’. Andrew’s parents, Fadi and Lyudmila Hamka, recognize the importance of early years education and how it affects the child’s emotional and intellectual development in his school years.
“Now children in kindergarten study what they used to study in grade one and even two. Younger kids are exposed to increasingly complex subjects. Unless we help them to fulfill their natural curiosity and offer them opportunities for mental challenges, they might feel overwhelmed and completely lost when they start kindergarten,”
said Fadi and Lyudmila. “The best way to prepare your child for kindergarten is to expose him to books and to other kids. He needs to be familiar with the printed word and storytelling.”
Partners in business and partners in life, Fadi and Lyudmila Hamka share a strong passion for science and great love for kids. They started The Little Columbus Company (www.little-columbus.com) when they discovered that there were very few products available to help them share their love of science with their young children. Products, that are fun, suitable for little readers, and at the same time informative and educational. Their own children’s curiosity and a high desire for knowledge inspired them to write books that would meet children’s intellectual and creative needs, provide opportunities for mental challenges as well as learning through play. With the publication of their first book “Discovering Gravity” from a series of science books for toddlers and preschoolers, they arm to deliver the best educational start in life for every child. The second book, titled “Discovering Light” will be published in few weeks. They are planning to introduce at least 4 new titles in the next 4 months.
The Little Columbus Company also offers free educational programs for toddlers and preschoolers. Programs targeted to introduce little children to science subject in an innovative and playful way, to give them the opportunity to socialize and learn. “We love what we do,” said Lyudmila and Fadi. “We make children smile and at the same time we help parents build a brighter future for their children.”
