Labels forecasts for 2011 & 2016

US label shipments are expected to surpass $18 billion in 2011. Sales will benefit from the continual development of materials and printing technologies that allow labels to provide products with a unique brand identity

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Dec 10, 2007 -
US label shipments are expected to surpass $18 billion in 2011. Sales will benefit from the continual development of materials and printing technologies that allow labels to provide products with a unique brand identity in the midst of a crowded marketplace. Full container labeling, which permits greater utilization of available space for graphics and marketing, will support growth, as will a shift toward more costly plastic labels that offer the “no-label look.”
Bar coding, smart labeling to boost secondary labels
Demand for secondary labels is projected to experience favorable growth based on the penetration of bar coding labels in the transportation and distribution sector, as well as advances in the electronic article surveillance and smart labeling markets. Demand will benefit from the increasingly important role labels play in electronic data processing and inventory control systems. The retail sector is the largest user of secondary labels, although the institutional, transportation and distribution sectors utilize them as well.
Plastic label stock to continue inroads on paper
Although paper is the most widely used label stock in the US, and will remain so through 2011, plastic continues to make inroads. Growth in plastic label stock demand will be based on the aesthetic and performance advantages of plastic  labels; the growing use of plastic packaging; and the popularity of labeling
methods like pressure sensitive, in-mold and shrink sleeve, which rely heavily on plastic substrates. A healthy pace of new product development will also buoy demand for plastics. Of the major label resins, polypropylene is forecast to exhibit the fastest growth, further supplanting polyvinyl chloride.
PSA to remain dominant label application method
Pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) will remain the dominant label application  method through the forecast period. Gains will result as pressure sensitive labels continue to capture market share from glue-applied labels in primary packaging applications. Inroads will primarily be based on PSA’s superior aesthetics; a single-step application process; a shrinking cost differential and
the low cost of dispensing equipment; and compatibility with a broader range of substrates and adhesives. Areas where pressure sensitive labels will achieve the most rapid gains include expanded content information labels and smart labeling. Technological improvements, such as in pressure sensitive label application equipment, will also promote growth through the forecast period.
