Dec. 10, 2007 - PRLog -- A time for family, travel, and shopping. The last thing in the world you want is for your nagging, aching back to act up and put a damper on your fun and relaxation. While back discomfort plagues an estimated four out of five Americans, life does not have to be a pain this holiday season. Even though the holiday season brings on many extra responsibilities and stresses that can significantly worsen your back tension, following certain precautions can help alleviate your aching back.

So how will you manage your holiday tension while dealing with in-laws, cramming into your airplane seat like a sardine, and shopping amid all the chaos? Taking the time to manage your stress and pain before it takes a toll on your back will guarantee you a happier, healthier, more pain-free holiday to enjoy to the fullest.

The following tips are by Michael Greenspan, owner of Massage Revolution in Manhattan Beach, CA and serving Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, and the entire South Massage,  will have you well on your way to maintaining a healthy back throughout the holidays:

1. Whether at home relaxing with family, or at work, sit on a firm chair with a supportive back. Never sit on very deep or overstuffed chairs or sofas.

2. When moving large objects, like rearranging furniture for holiday guests, push, don’t pull.

3. When traveling by plane, walk around a little in the middle aisle when possible and try some stretches like side bending and arching backwards.

4. When carrying luggage or shopping, try not to carry any heavy shoulder bags; they can pull you off balance and strain your back.

5. Avoid twisting to reach for objects like holiday ornaments or presents.

6. Use a stepstool to reach for high objects.

7. Don’t bend over furniture to open or close windows.

8. Don’t stand in one position for longer than a few moments. Shift your weight from one foot to the other, or elevate one foot on a small stool

9. When lying in bed, don’t extend your arms above your head or behind your neck. Instead, keep your arms relaxed at your sides.

10. Do your best not to sleep on your stomach. If you must, place a pillow under your abdomen to help relieve strain on your back.

11. When getting out of bed, bend your knees so your feet are flat on the bed. “Log roll” to your side and, as you bring your legs over the edge, begin to sit up.

12. Consult a qualified massage therapist and bodyworker if aches and pains persist. Massage Revolution's signature neuromuscular massage treatments can help you achieve a more pain-free, active, and healthier lifestyle.
