Dec. 6, 2007 - PRLog -- New Reference Book Series Provides Easy Access to Key Data on Energy, Transportation, and the Environment.

Information Publications is adding an Essential Topics Series to its set of annually-updated statistical sourcebooks. The first book in the series, Energy, Transportation & the Environment: A Statistical Sourcebook and Guide to Government Data, is the first volume in the series, which will expand to address other hot-button issues. Now available, Energy, Transportation & the Environment ($77, ISBN 978-0-929960-51-7, paperback) collects hard-to-find data from over 50 sources, on a variety of topics related to energy, transportation, and the environment, including Energy Production & Consumption, Alternative Fuels and Renewable Energy, International Energy, Cars & Driving, Public Transportation, Transportation Safety, Travel & Shipping, Natural Resources, Greenhouse Gases & Climate Change, Pollution and Chemical Exposure, Waste & Recycling, Economy, Employment, and Government Finance.

Combining the three topics into a single volume was a natural fit, says Publisher Eric Weiner. "Some of the most important issues of our time involve energy, transportation, and the environment, but the topics are so inextricably linked that it doesn't make sense to look at them separately. A high percentage of the United States' energy consumption goes towards powering our transportation. The burning of fossil fuels, in cars and for electricity generation, is a major source of pollution and greenhouse gases. The search for alternative sources of energy that will not harm the environment affects our transportation options. Energy prices are a major factor in the economy, and our need for oil influences our foreign policy."

The book also contains a full Guide to Sources. Publisher Eric Weiner says that "we wanted to give readers a first stop for any research project: an overview of all the relevant subject areas. The idea behind the Source Guide is to highlight useful sources, and point readers in helpful directions for further research." He says such a guide is necessary in the internet age. "All of the information in this book is available online – provided that you know where to look. That's the hard part. There's so much out there that you're just as likely to not be able to find the useful or reliable information you're looking for."

Founded in 1980, Information Publications also publishes two other series of reference books. The State and Municipal Profiles Series includes the Almanac of the 50 States, as well as municipal and county profile books on California, Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and North Carolina. The American Profiles Series consists of statistical sourcebooks for Asian, Black, and Hispanic Americans. Weiner says that the books are designed to be useful many types of readers, such as students, reference librarians, attorneys, researchers, government officials, journalists, and real estate professionals. "By bringing such a diverse set of data together in one volume, we save our readers the time and expense of gathering the data themselves."
