Submarine Networks Head Into New Waters

The concept of the information superhighway was based on a global undersea optical fibre cable backbone.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Nov 29, 2007 -
Successive technological breakthroughs in the area of optical fibres, optical amplification and switching, wavelength division, multiplexing and photonics has brought our society to this present day with mind-boggling telecommunications system capabilities. A number of leading local and international companies met recently at a BusinessZone-hosted event in Sandton, South Africa to discuss the impact of the commercial and strategic implications of regional and global networking requirements.

The Chairman of the event, Michael Ruddy of Terabit Consulting (USA) said: “I believe in the value and validity of traffic route planning and I’m often called on to present case studies to the global community on effective forecasting, analysis and business planning within this industry. This was an opportunity to discuss the needs inherent in the massive move towards planning for a global network”.

There has been a lot of discussion in the media around the topic regarding how useful this technology is, and whether the growth of the world’s submarine network cables are affecting the average consumer. With all divergent opinions aside, telecommunications companies are investing significantly, with Seacom a major player in the Southern African networks community.

The critical point at this juncture is the intervention of the government, and the interest of corporates nationally, who would like to see South Africa and its telecommunications industry operate on a level comparative to the international communities, and who encourage summits and conferences to discuss the most feasible way ahead, in an open forum.
