World Roofing forecasts to 2010 & 2015

Global demand for roofing materials is projected to advance more than two percent per year through 2010 to about nine billion square meters. Growth will decelerate slightly from the 2000-2005 pace as demand for roofing slackens in the large US market

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Nov 29, 2007 -
Counteracting the softer environment in the US will be healthy increases in demand in Asia, where ongoing building construction activity in China and India, coupled with a brightening economic outlook in Japan, will offer opportunities for new roofing.
Eastern Europe and the Africa/Mideast region will also exceed the world average for roofing demand. In Eastern Europe, residential construction and renovation will generate opportunities for roofing materials, although gains will decelerate modestly from the rapid pace of the early 2000s. In the Africa/Mideast region, economic expansion will foster construction activity that will stimulate demand for roofing.
Developed regions to post restrained demand gains
Unlike the world’s developing regions, the industrialized countries will see much more restrained increases in demand for roofing materials. Given the maturity of the building infrastructure in many of these countries, reroofing constitutes a larger proportion of demand. Prospects for roofing materials in the US, the global leader in roofing demand, will benefit from residential reroofing and an improving outlook for nonresidential building activity. However, a weakening in the construction of new single-family housing following the market peak in 2005 will counter gains in those markets.
Bituminous roofing remains dominant in North America
Bituminous roofing was the leading product segment by area in 2005, thanks to demand from the North American market. Bituminous shingles dominate in US and Canadian steep-slope applications, and these two countries account for approximately three-quarters of worldwide demand for the product. In low-slope roofing applications, modified bitumen membranes and built-up roofing are also popular. The foremost prospects for bituminous roofing products through the end of the decade are projected to be in developing Asian countries and Eastern Europe, where building construction activity will support demand for bituminous membrane roofing.
Demand for tile roofing is projected to rise at an above-average pace through 2010. Developing countries in Asia and Africa, along with Eastern Europe, will see solid gains for tile roofing based on expanding activity in building construction. Demand for tile roofing in Western Europe, the second largest market after the Asia/Pacific region, will accelerate from the 2000-2005 pace, but will remain below the world average for this material.
