iUniverse title Apache Casino, by G.N. Buffington, was recently recognized as one of the winning books at the 2007 New Mexico Book Awards. The book was chosen as the winner in the best novel, adventure drama category. Steve Shaw’s Beyond the Rio Grande, another title published by iUniverse, also received honors as a finalist in the same category.
Organized by the New Mexico Book Co-op, The New Mexico Book Awards was established to honor books from New Mexico and the Southwest. Winners and finalists were announced in approximately 30 categories ranging from historical fiction, Hispanic subjects, business books, photography and cookbooks.
While Buffington was appreciative of receiving his honor on a personal level, he considered his recognition also as a good platform to get the message of Apache Casino to a wider general audience. “I hope the story of Apache Casino is taken as a word of caution on the future proliferation of Native American casinos throughout the country,” said Buffington.

The winners were honored at a public event at the MCM Elegante Hotel in Albuquerque, N.M., on Nov. 9, 2007.
