Governor Phil Bredesen has appointed Todd Bottorff, President and Publisher of Turner Publishing, to the Board of Directors of Humanities Tennessee. Turner Publishing is a Nashville-based Independent Publisher of fiction and non-fiction titles including a series of large format gift books dealing with American cities, events, and famous icons, fiction titles under the imprint of Iroquois Press, and non-fiction paperback titles under the imprint of Trade Paper Press. Turner Publishing is on the list of Top 101 Independent Publishers in the U.S. as compiled by Bookmarket.com.

Humanities Tennessee was founded in 1973 and strives to create a sense of unity through humanities programs throughout the state. This not-for-profit hopes to reach all those who want to be involved with history and culture across the Volunteer State, and has set up programs to facilitate that goal.  Humanities Tennessee coordinates a variety of programs including: The Southern Festival of Books, the Tennessee History Program, and the Tennessee Young Writer’s workshop among other activities.

The Southern Festival of Books is held once a year in October and was one of the first book festivals beginning in 1989. The three-day gala invites more than 200 authors in all genres and is free to all comers, alternating between Memphis and Nashville every year. The Tennessee History Program is one of the initiatives begun by Humanities Tennessee, and is the umbrella for the Community History Development Fund, the Museum on Main Street program, and the Latino Community Initiative. The youth-oriented Tennessee Young Writers’ Workshop. The workshop is a weeklong event made for students to share their writing with published authors and their peers.
