Morrisville, NC – The National Association of Professional Organizers North Carolina  Chapter (NAPO-NC) focused on chronic disorganization at its November meeting, and provided information and education to its members on best practices for working with chronically disorganized clients.

Janice Russell, a Raleigh-based professional organizer and founder of Minding Your Matters, was the keynote speaker at the meeting. Russell is the first organizer in North Carolina to attain certification in chronic disorganization from the National Study Group on Chronic Disorganization (NSGCD). She also holds the title of Level Five Master Trainer through the NSGCD.

Russell explained that an organizer should ask three questions to determine whether a client is chronically disorganized: (1) Have you been disorganized your entire adult life? (2) Does being disorganized negatively affect you on a daily basis? (3) Have self-help efforts to get organized failed? If the answer to all three questions is yes, then the client is, according to the NSGCD, chronically disorganized. Russell went on to explain the differences between chronic disorganization and hoarding, and emphasized that, “It is important to make the right identification to properly help a client.”

Russell also addressed hoarding. “Stuffed,” a film about hoarding, its causes and how it impacts the lives of people who hoard, provided NAPO-NC members with insights into the phenomenon and how best to help hoarders.

“It is amazing to see the emotional attachment involved with hoarding and how far back the issues began for people living this way of life.  I was very moved by Janice's commitment to bring us this information to help us in our own businesses.  This is the most up to date information on this degree of hoarding available. I have immense respect for the contribution Janice has made to our NAPO-NC chapter in this field of study,” said Jessie Bennington of La Femme Concierge, Inc.
