The term Search Engine Optimization (SEO) refers to the art of optimizing a web site to obtain the highest possible rankings in Google. Google continues to fight this practice. Scott Duffy, of Nica-Elke Corporation, has a few simple things people can do to help their web sites improve their rankings.
1. Make sure your page titles are descriptive.
Some web sites uses their domain name (www.example.com)
For example, "How to Save Money on Groceries" will likely cause the reader to want to click and find out more information. It also tells Google that your site is a good destination for people wanting to save money.
2. Understand what keywords you want to rank high on.
Let's say you want your web site to rank highly when people search the words "Chicago Accountant". But you don't mention the word Chicago on your web site at all. How is Google supposed to know that your web site would be a good destination for people searching for Chicago Accountants?
"Make sure your keywords appear enough times on your web site. Use a keyword denisty tool to calculate how often they are appearing, and aim for about 3%", suggests Mr. Duffy.
3. Avoid the practice of keyword stuffing.
Some people take the advice of making sure their web page contains their desired keywords to far. "You do not want to mention your keyword an unnatural number of times, as Google might look at this as cheating." says Scott. If the Chicago Accountant created a web page that mentioned Chicago 100 times, it might likely ruin his chances for coming up when people are searching for Chicago-area accountants.
4. There is an art to SEO.
Optimizing your web site for Google is tricky. Google is doing it's best to find web sites that are too perfect and removing them from their index. You do not want that to happen.
