About the Global Threat Reduction Initiative

The GTRI mission is to reduce the threat of a terrorist acquiring the material for a crude nuclear weapon or a “dirty bomb”, by assisting foreign governments in improving cradle-to-grave security, control and disposition of non-military nuclear and radioactive materials.  The goal of the GTRI program is to convert, secure, or remove a wide variety of at-risk special nuclear material or dangerous radiological materials that are widely used for medical, scientific, and industrial purposes.  GTRI operates in the USA and more than 100 cooperating countries worldwide to address at-risk nuclear and radiological materials that pose, or could pose, a threat against the security of the USA and its allies and interests around the world.  Additional information can be found at www.nnsa.doe.gov.
