With the California wildfires raging on, insurance agents say it’s a good time to make sure all of your insurance policies are up to date.
An insured just had an addition put on her home in Niagara County. She told her insurance agent about it even before she started the work.
If a homeowner loses a house to fire, a typical homeowner’s insurance policy pays 100 percent to rebuild it.
A homeowner can get another 70 percent of the total value of coverage for the personal items lost in a fire.
Insurance agents suggest owners make a list of all of their personal property and keep it up to date.
"Talk to an agent,” said insurance agent Les Robinson. “Tell them how your house is laid out, what kind of rooms that you have, the style of the house, any additions that you've made or improvements like a three-walled addition or a custom kitchen or custom bathroom. These things can really change the replacement cost from what's generally in your neighborhood."
Agents also recommend taking pictures or making videos of the things in your house and storing those pictures somewhere safe.
This is especially true for people who have expensive items like electronics, antiques or art work.
