Chanukah In The City - Yidcore And John So Return To Federation Square For Festival Of Lights!

PRLog (Press Release) – Oct 28, 2007 – CHANUKAH IN THE CITY is presented by the Jewish Community Council of Victoria and is supported by the City of Melbourne. This major multi-denominational celebration is based on a similar event in New York City and is the only event of its type in Australia.

Chanukah, otherwise known as the Festival of Lights, commemorates the miracle that occurred when a Menorah, or Synagogue candelabra, remained lit for eight days when there was only enough oil to keep it alight for one.

CHANUKAH IN THE CITY 2007 will feature fabulous rides, activities for kids and adults alike, world class entertainment and is to be held in Federation Square on Tuesday 11th December.

Celebrations will commence at 4:00pm and continue throughout the late afternoon and into the evening. Guests include popular international children’s acts DOROTHY THE DINOSAUR and new children’s show CHRISSY’S ISLAND FAMILY, written by ARIA-award winning artist Christine Anu.

The daytime entertainment schedule also features some of the Melbourne Jewish community’s finest artists including the KLEZMERITIS and a range of performing community groups. The afternoon and evening culminates in entertainment from THE MELBOURNE JEWISH MALE VOICE CHOIR and the CHANUKAH ALL STARR BAND featuring Troy Sussman, Australia’s leading Jewish musical theatre performer. Special Guest band at CHANUKAH IN THE CITY 2007 is internationally
renowned Jewish punk rock band YIDCORE. These crazy boys of the alternative Australian music scene feature heavily on Triple J, and have just released their eighth album, ‘They Tried to Kill Us, They Failed, Let’s Eat!’

The Official proceedings and lighting of the Chanukiah will begin at 8:40pm with an address from the Lord Mayor John So, and the evening will culminate with the lighting of the largest gas-burning Chanukiah (candelabra) in the Southern Hemisphere. There will also be carnival rides, great food and plenty of entertainment and dancing to enjoy throughout the afternoon and evening.

Numbers are expected to grow in size this year after the success of 2006 where crowds flocked to Federation Square to celebrate with family, friends and the wider community under the stars and city lights.
