Oct. 25, 2007 - PRLog -- A development which offers an exciting new housing and care option for older people in West Sussex was officially opened yesterday (24th October).

Walstead Court, an extra care scheme of 26 one and two-bedroomed flats in Crawley, provides high-quality independent living, with 24-hour care provided to meet residents’ changing needs over time.

The purpose-built scheme, developed in partnership between Housing 21, West Sussex County Council, and Crawley Borough Council, replaces a former sheltered scheme whose old fashioned layout with shared facilities had become unpopular.

As well as enjoying purpose-built accommodation, residents have been provided with an on-site restaurant, hairdressing salon, gardens and sun terrace.  These facilities are open to all in the local community, providing a range of activities and support networks for older people, and helping enhance links with the local communities.

Housing 21 Chief Executive, Melinda Phillips, said:

“Walstead Court gives older people in West Sussex the opportunity to live in homes designed to meet their needs with the security of round-the-clock on-site care staff.

We are pleased to have worked in partnership with West Sussex County Council and Crawley Borough Council on this scheme, which will bring benefits not only to the residents, but also to the local community.”

West Sussex County Council Leader Henry Smith said: "We are delighted to be part of this partnership initiative with Housing 21 and Crawley Borough Council which is supporting older people to live independent and fulfilled lives within their own homes for longer."

Councillor Brenda Burgess, executive member for housing of Crawley Borough Council added:

'I'm delighted with this scheme. It provides much needed extra care flats which preserve the dignity and independence of people for longer, even if their health may be failing.'

Walstead Court was officially opened by Cllr Pat Arculus, Cabinet Member for Adults’ Services for West Sussex County Council and Elsie “Mick” Osgood, a resident at the scheme.
