Spoon have been together over a decade, with one of the most unusual trajectories of any band in recent memory-and one of the best and most unique songwriters in the world. Austin, TX’s finest indie rock export, Spoon is comprised of four gentlemen: Britt Daniel, Jim Eno, Eric Harvey and Rob Pope. Dubbed Spoon in homage to a song by the 1970s German avant-garde band Can, the band released their debut album, Telephono, in 1996 on Merge Records. Early favorable comparisons to the indie rock hybrid styles of Sonic Youth and the Pixies led to relationships and tours with Pavement, Guided By Voices, Silkworm and Archers of Loaf. After a move to Elektra Records for the release of A Series Of Sneaks (1998), Spoon went back to their indie roots and self-released several 7”inch singles and the EP The Agony of Laffitte (1999). Girls Can Tell (2001) was released on Merge and catapulted the band to the top of many critics’ year-end lists. Kill The Moonlight (2002) followed, further cementing the band’s place in the hearts of critics and fans alike. Gimme Fiction (2005) debuted at number 44 on the Billboard charts. The band also contributed to the soundtrack to the movie “Stranger Than Fiction”, and Britt co-authored the score to the film.
Most recently Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (2007) made a remarkable debut at number 10, and is being hailed as an indie label breakthrough. Building on Spoon's familiar minimal rhythmic piano/guitar vamp popularized on earlier hits, the album also moves through several different stylistic changes from atmospheric sounds to explosive rock to wall of sound horns. The album has been embraced by critics, with raves from Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Playboy, Wired, Details, The New Yorker, Time and the New York Times and the band recently appeared on “Saturday Night Live“ on October 6, 2007.
