NPR Worldwide and NPR’s Berlin FM station, NPR FM 104.1 have launched a one-hour block of DW-RADIO’s English program including “Inside Europe” and a specially repackaged version of “Quadriga”
The idea to launch a DW-RADIO block on NPR’s international service came out of informal discussions between Jeff Rosenberg, NPR’s Senior Producer who launched the Berlin radio station in 2006 and Deutsche Welle’s American Distribution Agent, Greg Fitzgerald. “It seemed like a natural fit to have DW-RADIO’s long respected ‘Inside Europe’ reaching English-speaking listeners in Berlin and worldwide, and when we started looking for another program with a Berlin hook, Quadriga was an obvious choice,” says Fitzgerald who also distributes and markets DW-TV programs in the U.S. “More and more public radio stations in the U.S. are broadcasting the audio from respected TV programs such as the ‘News Hour with Jim Lehrer’ on PBS, and given the fact that 99 percent of DW-TV’s ‘Quadriga’
NPR’s FM outlet in Berlin welcomes the opportunity to bring European perspectives and Berlin-based commentators on the week’s events to English-speakers in the German capital. NPR Worldwide values the same opportunity to match NPR’s US-based programming with differing viewpoints on issues and personalities in the news.
NPR Worldwide’s schedule is targeted for English-speaking audiences outside of the U.S. NPR Worldwide is heard via Hotbird throughout Europe and the Middle East. Furthermore, it is available via WorldSpace satellite radio in Africa and Asia. Much of the Worldwide schedule is also distributed to Armed Forces Radio and is aired on cable systems in Switzerland, Sweden and Austria. The service is also streamed via the NPR website, one of the most popular sites in the U.S.
