Learning Light helps digital businesses expand during Sheffield Business Week

As part of this year’s Sheffield Business Week, Learning Light, a non-profit centre of excellence in the use of learning technologies in the workplace, has run a seminar on human capital management as well as a Virtual Enterprise Network seminar.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release)Oct 15, 2007 – As part of this year’s Sheffield Business Week, Learning Light (LL), a non-profit centre of excellence in the use of learning technologies in the workplace, has run a seminar on human capital management as well as a Virtual Enterprise Network (VEN) seminar.

The human capital management (HCM) seminar was led by Jon Ingham, a research associate of LL, head of the human capital and change management consultancy Strategic Dynamics Consultancy Services Ltd and author of the book, ‘Strategic Human Capital Management’.

The seminar explored how HCM is qualitatively different from human resource management (HRM) as it exists in most organisations today.

Ingham, who advocates a strategic process for both the management and measurement of human capital and the HCM processes that underpin this, explained: “HCM focuses on maximising the capability and engagement of all the people working for an organisation. HCM does this through best fit with a particular organisation - its mission, vision, values and external environment - rather than on implementing a set of standard best practices as in HRM.

“This creates valuable intangible capability, human capital, which increasingly provides the key to unlocking great business performance.”

The Virtual Enterprise Network (VEN) seminar, which was held at Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, was led by LL’s Wendy Weller-Davies and Andrew Faughy from the VEN Group.

The event enabled delegates from companies operating in the learning technologies, computer gaming and creative content production markets to learn how this new form of collaboration works. Moreover, the seminar showed delegates how they can become part of the LL-led VEN Digital Network, or work with VEN Group to break into new markets.

Wendy Weller-Davies explained: “Earlier this year, LL became the lead company in VEN Group’s Digital Network, which connects large procurers with small and medium sized enterprises. Consequently, we are helping companies operating in learning technologies, computer gaming and creative content production markets to sell into one of the strongest cross-sector networks in the UK.”

VEN International – the organisation behind the concept of the VEN Digital Network - promotes business contract networks using a single collaborative commercial, legal, cost and IT system.

“LL supplies learning services and specialist consultancy services to VEN International,” explained LL’s CEO, Mark Pittaway. “In addition, VEN International promotes LL’s learning technologies and e-learning solutions to its customers.

“This means that LL is well placed to support other VEN networks - including Aerospace, Power and Health - with learning services and consultancy. This is bringing additional work opportunities for both LL and its associates - especially businesses in South Yorkshire.”
