Susan Driscoll, iUniverse president and CEO, brought her insider’s perspective on publishing to a recent airing of “The Writing Show,” with Susan B. serving as the host. Driscoll’s 20 years of experience in the traditional publishing arena and her current work in self-publishing shaped the focus of the Oct. 7 episode. She addressed many of the common misperceptions that aspiring, as well as more seasoned authors, have about both industries.
“The Writing Show” pod casts are set up to provide inspiration and information to writers from all genres. Among the topics covered during the hour-long program featuring Driscoll were the cost an author can expect to pay through traditional publishing; the differences between iUniverse and traditional vanity presses; and how iUniverse authors can get their books into stores.
While most of the interview touched on the differences between traditional and self-publishing, Driscoll felt there were a few strong commonalities that the two shared, which blurred the line between both industries. And the place where many of these similarities merge are online. “The Internet is the great equalizer,” said Driscoll. “There are so many ways to reach readers and reach communities that are just much more efficient for authors.”
When Susan B. shifted the topic to whether there is a reality in the view that traditional publishers look at authors who self-publish with disapproval, Driscoll said it depended on the publisher or the agent. “It’s certainly becoming more acceptable to self-publish,”
