ENTERTAINMENT WIRE TALKS TO AUTHOR ABOUT HIS PHYLLIS HYMAN BIOGRAPHY
Jacksonville, Florida – Author Jason A. Michael recently spoke with Entertainment Wire about his book, Strength of a Woman: The Phyllis Hyman Story. The biography chronicles the late singer’s life, including her private battle with addiction and bipolar disorder, which lead to her death in 1995.
In the book, Michael explored Hyman’s career concerns and frustrations. He says she feared sacrificing her art and becoming a commodity. As stated in the book, key opportunities to advance her career were sidelined by many factors, including her mental illness.
“She was very off the cuff, where anything could have come out of her mouth. Folks probably knew there were issues,” said Michael, making careful note of her uphill struggles. “When you look at the load she had to carry, you see that it was remarkable that she was able to carry this as long as she did.”
