Key Insights On The Automotive Sector Of Brazil
The performance of Brazil's automotive sector is in line with It's forecasts for the industry, as reflected in the Brazil Automotives Report for Q406. Industry representatives have been greatly cheered by a surge in production and sales, with the automotive industry association Anfavea raising its full-year sales forecast from 1.84mn units to 1.9mn units. After reaching record levels in October, Anfavea expects total production to reach 2.54mn units. It, meanwhile, maintains its sales forecast of 1.86mn units for 2006, rising to 2.33mn in 2010. We expect total production to reach 2.74mn vehicles in 2006. It is not all plain sailing for the industry, however, as the strong real continues to lean on exports, which were significantly down during the first 10 months of the year.
Fiat continues to lead the Brazilian market by sales. According to Anfavea, the Italian carmaker sold 330,184 units on the wholesale market ahead of Volkswagen (VW), which sold 302,088 units. Sales for General Motors (GM) totalled 298,497 units, while Ford was some way behind the market leaders with 117,767 units. With respect to production, VW maintained its lead, turning out 460,833 units during the period. Fiat is closing the gap, however, producing 396,642 units. GM made 356,445 units, while Ford produced 144,462 units.
As mentioned above, the appreciating real continues to drag on the export businesses of carmakers. For the first 10 months of 2006, exports were down to 533,900 units, against 601,300 units for the same period a year before. Embattled carmaker VW continues to feel the heat in this segment. The German carmaker announced earlier in 2006 that it would be cutting the amount of cars produced for export as from 2007. VW operates five plants in Brazil and employs some 22,000 workers. According to company sources, exports will be cut from 2005's level of 40% to below 30% by 2007. VW therefore expects exports to fall from 197,000 in 2006 to 156,000 next year. It's full-year projection of 848,102 units for 2006 may prove optimistic therefore.
In terms of industry developments, Brazil and Mexico have concluded a new free-trade agreement relating to light commercial vehicles (LCVs) and the majority of car parts. The agreement, which will seek to redress an imbalance in exports between the two countries (Brazil's formidable productive arm having dwarfed exports from Mexico), came into effect on 1 January 2007.
As the industry hurtles towards the new year, optimism for future growth is high. Fiat, for example, is eyeing increased production in the country as from 2007. The carmaker, confident of an ongoing recovery in the market, intends to boost production in Brazil by 4% to 560,000 units in 2007. Fiat's commitment to Brazil is in line with the country's position in It's Business Environment Ranking, which sees Brazil retain fourth place. The ranking has been conferred precisely because of the opportunities remaining to be tapped in the market and the strength of the overall economy.
