Key Insights On The Automotive Sector Of Venezuela
In 2006 Venezuela's automotive industry has posted robust results in the key areas of sales and production. Bumper sales, which have been attributed to soaring oil prices, the success of social programmes such as 'Venezuela Mobile' and the desire on behalf of consumers to protect themselves against rising inflation, has forced BMI to raise its full-year sales forecast in the Venezuela Automotives Report for Q406. Industry majors General Motors (GM), Ford and Toyota continue to dominate the market, with the ever-ambitious Toyota closing the gap on Ford.
According to the Venezuelan automotive industry association CAVENEZ, sales in November reached 40,281 units, representing a 10.28% increase on October. During the year to November some 308,670 units were sold in the country. GM sold 81,240 units during the period, Ford sold 56,042 units, while Toyota remained in third place, selling 43,562 units. The programme 'Venezuela Mobile', which waives the VAT on certain vehicles, has been key to boosting sales. Of GM's total sales, 22,569 units of its Aveo were sold under Venezuela Mobile. Ford sold 12,171 units of its Fiesta and 7,117 units of its Ka under the programme. Toyota, meanwhile, sold 9,968 units of its Terios sports utility vehicle. During the period January-November, Venezuela Mobile accounted for sales of 73,801 units, representing 23.91% of overall sales for the period. BMI has significantly raised its forecast for the year from a modest 239,850 units to 345,000 units. We have also hiked our projection for the remainder of the forecast period.
The outlook is also bright in terms of output. Total production for the year to November totalled 162,771 units, representing an 11.63% increase on the same period a year before. GM continues to rank as the country's biggest vehicle producer. In November, GM turned out 8,263 units, 2.11% up on figures reported in October. During the period January-November, GM made 63,536 units. November also saw Toyota overtake Ford to rank as the second-biggest carmaker although Ford maintains its position in line with full-year figures. Total output for Toyota reached 3,384 units in November, which was actually 2.48% down on October. In the year to November, the Japanese carmaker made some 32,805 vehicles. Some 2,908 vehicles rolled off Ford's assembly line in November, a fall of 16.17%. Full-year figures for production reflect a key trend in the sector: consumer demand is such that it is fast outstripping supply, forcing manufacturers to rely more on imports. According to data from CAVENEZ, sales of imported vehicles accounted for 52.72% of total sales for the period January-November 2006. BMI maintains its forecast for output of 166,646 units for the year.
With respect to industry developments, the Venezuelan and Iranian governments have joined forces to open a car plant in Venezuela. The plant will allow Venezuela to lower its dependence on US imports, boost domestic output and provide cheap vehicles for the less affluent. While the project will be welcomed by those dependent on the social programmes promoted by the country's president, Hugo Chávez, we are cautious regarding the possible implications for the country's business environment. Venezuela currently ranks fifth on BMI's Business Environment Ranking. This ranking may change, given that Chávez's fiercely nationalistic stance has already alienated foreign investment in other industries. Similarly, a question-mark has arisen as to how long the oil boom that has fuelled such record sales can continue to buoy the industry.
