Key Insights On The Automotive Sector Of Bulgaria
Autos majors are investing millions of euros in expanding their sales operations in Bulgaria, a candidate for EU accession that witnessed the world's highest car sales growth rate in 2005, with 35.5% growth. In the first three quarters of 2006, Bulgarian passenger car and light commercial vehicle sales totalled 28,568 units, while bus and truck sales totalled 1,418 units. Given this performance and projected trends for Q406, It's newly released Bulgaria Automotives Report forecasts that total automotive sales are set to rise by 15.8% by year-end 2006, with further moderation over the forecast period following EU accession in 2007. The fall in sales growth is largely due to a decline in household consumption brought about by the central bank's efforts to curb credit growth and meet EU inflation targets ahead of accession in 2007. A tighter monetary policy, aimed at reducing both the demand for and supply of credit is moderating car sales growth. We forecast that car sales will grow by 4-6% annually over the next five years to 35,839 units. Strong growth in the commercial vehicles segment will be driven by infrastructural development, particularly transportation corridors between the Balkan States and Turkey. EU-Turkey trade will be crucial to the success of the Bulgarian commercial vehicles market, which could receive a major boost if Turkey accedes to the EU.
The impact of EU membership from Q107 is not likely to have any drastic effects on the market. Bulgaria's autos sector could actually benefit from the introduction of EU environmental standards, which could cut down used vehicle imports. Used vehicles account for 85% of the country's vehicle stock and imports of used vehicles out-number new vehicles by 10 to one. It is unlikely that the automotive market will be further saturated with used vehicles, particularly given Bulgaria's GDP growth forecasts, which are being buoyed by consumer spending and private investment. This is good news for carmakers seeking expansion in Europe's emerging markets and could even attract investment in car assembly.
The Bulgarian market is highly competitive, with opportunities for all autos majors to increase their market share. In the first three quarters of 2006, Peugeot established itself as Bulgaria's most popular brand with an 11.73% market share. Peugeot had lost its position as market leader to Ford in Q106, but has since regained its strength with Ford representing 9.52% of sales slipping behind Toyota which secured a 10.17% market share. The PSA Peugeot Citroën Group's total market share has fallen from 22.33% in 2005 to 19.27% in the first three quarters of 2006.
