Key Insights On The Automotive Sector Of United Kingdom
As 2006 came to a close the UK's automotive industry reached a crucial stage. A gradual decline in production, as the industry witnessed the demise of the iconic MG Rover, and heavyweights such as France's Peugeot followed through on plans to end production in the country, has had a negative impact on year-end figures. In BMI's UK Automotives Report for Q406 we have lowered our forecasts for both production and sales, while we expect figures to stabilise in 2007.
Overall production has experienced a significant downturn in the second half of 2006. In line with data from the UK's Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), total output in September 2006 reached 143,732 units, down 15.3% on the same month a year before. Production for the year to September reached 1,264,225 units, representing a year-on-year (y-o-y) decline of 8.5%. Output fell again month-on-month (m-o-m) in October, by 5.1% to 136,028 units. Production for the year to October was down 8.2% to 1,400,264 units. We have therefore lowered our forecast for the year to 1.70mn units. Our figures for the period up to 2010 have also been slightly modified. It remains to be seen, however, what impact production projects by the likes of BMW and Nissan will have on the industry at a later date.
Sales in the UK market have continued to slide in the latter stages of 2006. While new car registrations edged up in October by 0.9% to 153,851 units, registrations for the year were down 3.2% to 2,055,739 units, although diesel registrations grew by 5.4% to 64,128 units. New car registrations dipped again in November m-o-m, this time by 2% to 155,315 units. Figures for the period January-November were down 3.1% y-o-y to 2,211,054 units. Ford continues to lead the market. The US carmaker sold some 325,457 units on the UK market during the period January-November. Vauxhall sold 285,093 units, while Volkswagen (VW) sold 178,154 units. With SMMT expecting a further downturn of around 13% in December, BMI has lowered its forecast for the year to 2.34mn units. Our projection for 2007 is based on SMMT estimations that the market will contract by a further 1.3%.
With respect to industry developments this quarter, Antonov plc, the UK-based transmissions manufacturer, has announced a production agreement with Zhejiang Geely Automobile Gearbox Co, the Geely Automotive subsidiary engaged in the production of transmissions. The licence, which has not yet been finalised, covers the production of Geely's TX6 six-speed automatic transmission. The manufacturers will develop the transmission, which will be used in Geely's vehicles and may also be made available to carmakers worldwide.
