Executive Summary
The Sector At A Glance
Key Insights On The Automotive Sector Of Czech Republic
It's newly released Czech Republic Automotives Report finds that in the first three quarters of 2006, automotive production, including motorbikes, rose 48.9% y-o-y to 636,464 units. Growth was stimulated by a 55% y-o-y rise in exports to 585,289 units. The production growth was largely thanks to the launch of production at full capacity in TPCA Kolin and higher output at Skoda Auto. The Czech Republic's automotive output in 2010 is likely to double the level seen in 2005 due to the opening of the Hyundai plant in 2008, expansion of the existing Skoda plant and a rapid increase in production at the TPCA plant as it reaches capacity. By 2010, total automotive production capacity will exceed 1mn units per annum. The Czech Republic is unlikely to be affected by any downturn in the European automotive market, with autos majors Toyota and PSA Peugeot Citroën preferring to cut output at plants with higher overheads - such as labour costs - at their Western European plants rather than scaling back on Czech output.
While output is booming, Czech autos sales are flat. Figures published by the Czech Republic's Car Importers' Association (SDA) reveal that passenger car sales fell 2.8% y-o-y to 103,646 units in the first 10 months of 2006, while light commercial vehicle sales grew 28.1% y-o-y to 4,716 units, truck sales rose 16.6% to 8,093 units and bus sales rose 18.1% to 758 units. Car sales are forecast to fall by 3% y-o-y by end-2006. However, strong growth in the commercial vehicles segment should lead to overall automotive sales growth of 3.1%, a revision compared to the 2.0% growth forecast in the previous quarter's report. Commercial vehicle sales growth will be stimulated by high levels of capital investment in the transportation sector, related to growth in the freight sector. Overall automotive sales growth should dip to around 2.0% in 2007 due to an expected downturn in GDP growth, but by the end of the decade annual sales growth should exceed 5%.
Czech carmaker Skoda held a 41.6% share of the car market and 23.6% of the LCV market in the first 10 months of 2006. Its car sales fell 9.1%, while its LCV sales grew 57.6% to 9.249 units, largely due to LCV variants of the Octavia and Fabia models. Overall, its combined car and LCV sales dropped 1.7%. The brands making gains on the Czech car market in the first 10 months of 2006 included Fiat (up 10.7% to 2,512 units), Honda (up 35.8% to 1,810 units), Citroën (up 34.2% to 4,493 units), Kia (up 37.7% to 2,200 units) and Suzuki (up 43.4% to 1,957 units). Foreign competitors present a significant challenge to Skoda's continued pre-eminence, and Volkswagen will have to be on its guard if the combined brand is to retain a leading position over the coming years, both in terms of domestic sales and the export sector. The biggest threat comes from the TPCA plant, which opened in June 2005, and the Hyundai plant, which is currently under construction
