Executive Summary
The Greek automotive market saw sales drop 0.7% in January-October 2006 and sales are likely to remain stagnant in the years ahead, according to BMI's latest Greece Automotive Report. The slump in the market that occurred in H205 appears to have bottomed out in 2006, but there are no signs of any strong recovery in the near future. One of the main reasons for the decline in H205 was the fall off in sales following the Athens Olympics, which had dramatically increased purchases by car rental companies in 2004 and H105. The 2006 sales figures represent a post-Olympics market correction. BMI forecasts year-end vehicle sales falling 1.2% y-o-y to 291,713 units, with December expected to record the lowest monthly sales figures due to seasonal trends in the Greek car market. Car sales are expected to record a drop of 0.8% over 2005, while commercial vehicle sales are set to decline by 5.4%.
The minicar segment is the fastest growing in the Greek automotive sector, representing 10% of sales in January-November 2006, compared to 7.8% in 2005, with the Fiat Panda leading sales and representing 16.5% of sales in the segment. The medium and large car segments saw the largest drop in market share, falling from 31.4% and 12.1% to 29.1% and 11.0% respectively. The largest segment is the small car segment, which represents 29.9% of sales, with the Hyundai Getz and Toyota Yaris representing 9.0% and 8.5% of segment sales respectively.
The Greek car market is highly competitive with brand popularity determined by price. In January-November 2006, Toyota performed well due to a more aggressive marketing campaign and the declining value of the yen to the euro, which has pushed down prices. It has increased its market share from 8.2% in 2005 to 9.7%, moving it from second to first place in terms of brand popularity. Meanwhile, Hyundai has slipped from first place to third place, with its market share plummeting from 9.3% to 7.5%, due to a 20.7% fall in sales. Volkswagen from fifth to second place on the back of a 13.5% rise in sales, which gave it a market share of 7.9%, up from 6.9%. Aside from Hyundai's disastrous performance, Opel, Renault and Kia recorded declines of 15.9%, 22.6% and 20.6% respectively, while Mitsubishi and Peugeot sales rose 24.3% and 18.1% respectively.
