Oct 01, 2007 – The Aditya Birla Group Scholarship (ABGS) scheme, instituted in 1999, is a way to foster outstanding academic excellence and humane leadership values, in partnership with select prestigeous top ranking institutions in India Today such as BITS Pilani, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT s) and Indian Institute of Management (IIM s).
The scholarship amount of hundred and seventy five thousand rupees per annum for IIMs and sixty five thousand rupees per annum for IITs and BITS Pilani covers the academic fees as well as the hostel fees for the entire duration of the curriculum at these institutions. The selection process is no cakewalk. Applications were invited from only top twenty students from each of the select premier institutes and the candidates were evaluated on parameters pegged not only on academic excellence but also on extra-curricular activities, the demonstration of leadership qualities and an articulation of their values, social vision and aspirational goals. The short listed forty three candidates went through a challenge round at Mumbai on 22 September 2007. The panel of judges comprised of Ms Anu Aga, Diector Thermax Ltd; Mr Harsh Manglik, Chairman & Geography Managing Director, Accenture; Ms. Sudha Pillai, Secretary to the Government of India - Ministry of Labour; Prof. Arvind Kumar, Director - Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education Tata Institute of Fundamental Research; Ms. Sunita Narain, Director - Centre for Science & Environment (CSE); Mr. Kiran Karnik, President – NASSCOM; Ms. Ajita Bajpai Pande, Joint Secretary to the GOI - Ministry of Mines to arrive at the final list of 22 proud winners of this coveted scholarship. Ms Namrata Raman is the proud winner of this prestigious scholarship for this year from Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani. Namrata joined BITS Pilani in July 2007 after clearing the online BITSAT examination to pursue her first choice B.E. (Hons) Chemical Engineering. Bharatanatyam dancer Namrata's interests include Tanjore Paintings and she has a passion to excel in the field of Environmental Chemistry in the years to come. Proud to be a BITSian Namrata has reiterated the fact that the real race for excellence is the one where you sprint against you yourself and that winning in tough situations is a way of life for the students of this institute located in the heart of the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan. The Aditya Birla scholarship winners from BITS Pilani in the previous years include Neelam Prabhu Gaonkar, Shanta Pratyusha Bodapat, Indu Mohan, Patel Ravish Harishbhai, Sonu Swaika, Uzma Hussain, Pankaj Debnath, Digbijoy Neelam Nath, Swagat Borah, Hema Arora, Sandeep Gaud, Rachit Chandra and Pusph Saurav. In the past several BITS Alumni have won the scholarship among the IIMs category also.
