Prof L K Maheshwari (LKM) the Vice Chancellor of Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani Rajasthan took time out of his busy Texmaco MoU signing function schedule in Kolkata the City of Joy, on Sepember 22, 2007, and gave an inspiring talk on Education for the 21st century at the Kala Mandir Auditorium to a spell bound impressive gathering of students and teachers from various Birla Schools.
In his lecture Prof LKM focused on Change Drivers such as developments in ICT & Media Technology, Globalization, Economic Restructuring, ICT based economy and distributed knowledge production systems. He gave a clarion call for a consortium of Academic Experts, Educational Technologists and Industries to bring out changes in curriculum development and delivery methodology.
Prof LKM was emphatic in stating that universities must include enabling technology transfer as its core function. He also highlighted the educational innovations that have been carried at BITS Pilani for the past several decades.
Prof LKM gave lucid answers to the young students and teachers, who fielded questions on possibility of foreigners coming to India for education, future of liberal arts and humanistic studies courses, technology versus unemployment issues.
At the end of the lecture, it undoubtedly emerged that if change is an inevitable challenge, then innovation is the response and knowledge is the weapon.
