This new global diversity is important to the entire world. It is not just about employees getting along, mobility or marketing to diverse communities, it is about the ability to effectively conduct business. There is a huge inter-dependence for natural resources, labor and technology. If we choose to ignore diversity, it may lead to the demise of the world economy.
Most companies in North America recognize that there are significant advantages to integrating workers from culturally diverse backgrounds into their workforce. However, many firms don’t understand the full importance of doing this. Diversity needs to be seen as the business plan, essential to successful products and increased sales. This is especially true in today’s global marketplace, as companies interact with different cultures and clients.
Among the advantages of a well-integrated company are: increased creativity, increased productivity, new attitudes, new language skills, global understanding, new processes, and new solutions to difficult problems.
We don’t have to wait until 2010 Winter Olympics for the world to come here; rather the world is already here. Let’s celebrate it. Let us gain different perspectives in life, solve our communal problems. Let us live in a global village, thinking globally and acting locally. Diverse communities truly do enrich our lives.
