Grand Slam Winning Garryowen F.C. To Be Honoured By Limerick County Council

Limerick, IRELAND, 18th Sept 07 - Grand Slam winners Garryowen F.C. are to be honoured by Limerick County Council at a Civic Reception on Monday next 24th September at County Hall, Dooradoyle.

PRLog (Press Release)Sep 18, 2007 – The tribute follows a spectacular 2006/7 season during which the Dooradoyle-based club won an unprecedented Grand Slam, picking up the AIB League and Cup, as well as Munster Senior and Junior Cups.  

According to Cllr. Kevin Sheahan, Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council, "The Council is delighted to officially recognise Garryowen FC’s record achievement in being the first club to win the Munster Senior Cup, Munster Junior Cup AIB Cup and AIB League Division in a single season.  A Civic Reception is the highest accolade at the disposal of Limerick County Council for any individual, group or organisation."

Cllr. Sheahan paid tribute to Garryowen's contribution to rugby and the part played by the club in profiling Limerick’s proud sporting tradition at national level.

"The 2006/7 senior team included no fewer than 11 players from the club's Rugby Academy, which is a testament to Limerick rugby and the club’s role in developing the best in young talent", he stated.

Commenting ahead of the Civic Reception, Christy Barry, PRO of Garryowen F.C. said, "It is a great honour and privilege to be honoured by Limerick County Council.  With the new season due to start next month, the Civic Reception is sure to inspire the current squad and management team."

"The management, players and supporters are a credit to this club and continue to be wonderful ambassadors for Limerick.  It was a fantastic season for us last year and we are delighted that we brought such success and a positive profile to Limerick", added Mr. Barry.

The Civic Reception takes place in County Hall at 4.30pm on Monday 24th September 2007.
