The base molding and shoe molding is used to finish the look of the floor and wall. When you are having a new floor put down, you would be wise to use the old moldings. Prying only at the studs in the wall will be the best way to remove the molding. This is best done by using the thin side of a pry bar and placing it between the baseboard and the wall and prying outward. This will release the molding from the wall. Placing wood wedges behind the molding will hold it out while you are pulling the rest of it loose.
If this is done properly you will be able to save your crown molding and shoe molding so you can use it again and save on this expense. If you hire someone to install hardwood floor for you, and they do not want to remove this molding, call someone else to do this. It is a necessity for your flooring to look right and be done perfectly so as to have the professional look that you want your floors to have.
