Competition amongst Internet Service Providers has been getting tougher and tougher over recent years, and with an increased number of providers to choose from, lower prices, increased accessibility to broadband, and an increase in the popularity of Internet use across all ages, the overall popularity of broadband is rising and looks set to enjoy continued growth in the future.
The report from the Office of National Statistics shows that in March of this year just under eighty four percent of total Internet connections were broadband connections. However, by June 2007 this had risen to over eighty six percent. Of course, as broadband popularity increases the number of dial up connections has decreased, and in June 2007 just under fourteen percent of all Internet connections were dial up.
In its report the Office of National Statistics stated: 'The market share of broadband connections has been increasing since the index began in 2001, reflecting its growing popularity, widespread availability and competitive connection packages offered by ISPs.'
The report also showed how consumers on broadband are enjoying increased speeds, with around forty three percent having speeds of over 2Mbps in March of this year, which has now risen to over forty seven percent. Value for money on high speed broadband packages has enabled more and more consumers to opt for higher speed packages.
