PRESS RELEASE

LAMONT CAREY: FROM PRISON TO STAGE

Washington, DC, August 29, 2007

In a historic performance at the nationally acclaimed KENNEDY CENTER, Lamont Carey joins a cast of performers – all ex-prisoners – to grace the stage at the Page-to-Stage Festival!

The three day Page-to-Stage Festival will showcase the production, produced by The Prison Foundation, on September 1st  2007 at 7:00 PM (EST).  This FREE musical and spoken word performance is guaranteed to be the highlight of this three day event.

The powerhouse performance of DC native Lamont Carey – who has the distinction of opening the second act of the show -- is highly anticipated and will be his first Kennedy Center stage appearance, adding to artistic credits as diverse as appearances on HBO’s “The Wire”, “The Michael Baisden Show”, and most recently “Def Poetry Jam.”

Other performers include One Wise African, The Inner Voices, Lidia Perez, and The Prison Foundation’s own Dennis Sobin, along with many more.

Mr. Carey enthusiastically stated about the show “My hope is that this show captures a new audience -- an audience that wants to see how lives can change and transform.  I hope that it inspires others to embrace the idea of giving people who have made mistakes a real second chance. The talent that will appear on this stage is engraved into the hearts of these individuals. The power in their voices and performances will clarify that they have arrived.”

Lamont Carey was born in Washington D.C., but raised in prison. While incarcerated, the arts helped him to refocus and set new goals. He began writing in 1994. To date, he's written several novels, screenplays, and children's books.  Autographed copies of his CD, “Imagine” and his well received new book “Why I Keep You a Secret” will be available at the performance.  Mr. Carey was voted Poet of the Year by Dreams in Motion 2005 and received the Community Poet of the Year award in 2007 from the National Underground Spoken Word and Poetry Award (the poetic equivalent of the Oscars).
