Importance of Water Quality Testing Stressed

Water treatment professionals urge private citizens to take action and establish the safety of their water supply.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Aug 24, 2007 -
Cottage Grove, MN – August 24, 2007.

Water safety is a growing concern for many Americans. Recent surveys have indicated that more and more citizens feel that their water supply is likely to be contaminated or insufficient in some way. Water treatment professionals urge private citizens to take action and establish the safety of their water supply.

An amendment to the 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act clearly states that public water suppliers must offer a document that includes basic statistical information about the condition of the water they provide customer. More than 55,000 public water suppliers have been requested and required to provide this information. If the data supplied is sufficient to set the consumer’s mind at ease, he or she can take further steps.

First, it is important to note characteristics of the local water supply. If it smells bad, looks wrong (cloudy, or colored inappropriately), or leaves the consumer feeling unwell (causes skin reactions, stomach upset, or similar problems), these problems should be noted in order to further ascertain the nature of the problem.

Secondly, the water should undergo testing to break down in logical fashion the elements that are corrupting the water supply. There are state-government certified laboratories that will do water testing. Another option is for the consumer to order his or her own water test kit and do the test at home. Either way, the consumer learns about the undesirable elements in the water supply and is thus able to take action to better the situation.

Most consumers find that the problems with their water are relatively minor and easily solved. The most common complaint, water that tastes like chlorine, is easily addressed by filtering drinking water through a carbon water filter. Other concerns, such as metals (lead, copper, iron) in water, or chemicals such as arsenic, can also be monitored and addressed through the use of water filtration systems. These can be installed to operate for all the water in a house, including laundry systems, or can be as simple as a pitcher for drinking water, with a filter installed at the top.

Increased environmental awareness on all levels means that American consumers are growing savvier and better equipped to take care of problems like unsatisfactory or dangerous drinking water. There is no reason why anyone’s tap water should cause illness or discomfort, and there is no reason why anyone’s water should have to be replaced with costly and inefficient bottled waters (the sources of which are often no better than the consumer’s own tap water). Every American should be able to drink their tap water with confidence and pleasure.
