"Reuben executes with great class and discrete technical mastery of the instrument..."
Guitarist Thomas Reuben explores improvised compositions in this jazz-infused quartet featuring Marc Edwards on drums, Francois Grillot on bass and Diego Manuschevich on saxophones and flute.
Recorded in May 2006, the 59-minute CD "In Tongues," was released August 2007.
The music on "In Tongues" was recorded live to two track at Loho Studios in Lower Manhattan, NYC.
The quartet was formed in 2006, consisting of Marc Edwards, the long-established free jazz drummer and band leader whose played with Charles Gayle, David S. Ware and Cecil Taylor; Francois Grillot, the prolific free jazz bassist who's appeared on many CIMP CDs and performed extensively with many groups; and Diego Manuschevich, the Chilean improvisational saxophonist and flutist of Los Ogros Del Swing, Santiago, Chile.
The group held few rehearsals in preparation for the record date, with loosely adhered-to charts as a guide the quartet interpreted concepts such as "Rain" and "Windchimes"
The guitar heard on "In Tongues" is a Gibson 333 played through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe tube amplifier with no outboard effects.
The session was tracked to digital and mixed to 1/2 inch tape by engineer Ivan Higa and second engineer Patrick Billard, and mastered by Nathan James at Jigsaw Sound in Manhattan.
